Market Volatility: Don’t Panic. Get a Second Opinion.
Yesterday, November 5th, investors experienced a sharp sell-off in the stock market. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52%, while the S&P 500 declined 4.36%, driven largely by concerns surrounding the future growth of artificial intelligence (AI) companies and uncertainty following the midterm elections.
There’s no question that market declines like these can make investors nervous. And with the possibility of more volatility ahead, those concerns are understandable.
But here’s something we believe investors need to remember: Don’t try to time the market.
History has shown us that trying to predict when to get out of the market, and more importantly, when to get back in, can be a costly mistake.
In fact, historical market research has shown that some of the stock market’s best days have occurred very close to some of its worst days. Missing those recovery days can have a significant impact on your long-term investment results.
It’s also important to keep things in perspective.
Despite yesterday’s sharp decline, the S&P 500 remains up approximately 8.43% for the year, while the Nasdaq Composite is still up approximately 4.62%.
So while yesterday’s market performance certainly got everyone’s attention, it doesn’t necessarily mean investors should abandon their long-term investment strategies.
What it does mean, in our opinion, is that now may be an excellent time to get a second opinion.
Do you really know what you own? Are your investments properly positioned for your financial goals and your tolerance for risk? Are you more heavily invested in certain areas of the market, such as technology, than you may realize?
