Munis Could Be in for a Rough Week Ahead

“Yields in my opinion are still of value, but lately you’re looking at 3.5% or 4% on long-dated deals, and individuals are still buying despite not hitting that magical 5% return on longer-dated bonds,” Walsh says. On Thursday, the State of California sold a $2 billion bond offering that featured a top yield of 4.13% for the longest-dated 26-year maturity. Walsh reminds investors that muni bonds are best viewed as long-term income-generating investments. “Yes, it’s a dynamic security, but most individuals are buying it and holding it,” he says. “They’re looking for safety and looking for income. You shouldn’t just go chasing returns.”

Will Obama’s Tax Overhaul Boost Stocks?

Kate Stalter: We’re talking about municipal bonds today with Bill Walsh, of advisory firm Hennion & Walsh. Bill, tell our listeners why you believe munis are a good investment in today’s economy, and with the volatile equities market.

Bill Walsh:
Well, I think municipal bonds have proven, in this economy—and certainly with the volatility of the equity market—to be a very, very good place for people that are looking for conservative income to invest in. I think it proves out that bonds are…I always say bonds are boring. You know, last year, I guess there were some headlines on it, and they tried to get them to be something more than what they are. But historically, if you buy high-quality bonds, you get your income every six months, and when principal comes due, you get your money back.

Why A Greek Default Is Imminent

Judging by the market’s overwhelmingly positive reaction last week to the announcement of a rescue package on the part of European leaders for the ongoing saga with Greece, one would have thought that Greece was the only obstacle preventing the stock market from moving higher. While we believe that there are still many other headwinds (Ex. jobless claims, high unemployment, weak consumer spending, lackluster real estate market, rising commodity prices, etc…) confronting the economic recovery and stock markets, this European dominated market sentiment was confirmed this week as the markets have now given back approximately 500 points (at the time of writing this post) of their recent gains over renewed concerns that the terms of the most recent rescue package may not be accepted by the Greek government and/or be enough to prevent further contagion and fully stabilize affected European banks.

When the Glitter Is Gone From Your Gold

Kevin Mahn, president and CIO of New Jersey-based Hennion & Walsh Asset Management, also thinks gold is due for a correction..."You have to remember that if you are buying the hard commodity it is less liquid than investing in an ETF or an ETN, which you could just dispose of in the markets at any point in the trading day," he adds. "People think because they hold gold bars or coins that it is easy to dispose of, and they find that is not the case. You can get taken advantage of and in many cases have to discount the price to actually get a buyer to emerge. Then, if you add up all the custodial costs to actually holding the commodity, that is going to eat into any potential returns you have. Investors would be wise to do their due diligence whether they are buying the ETF or the physical commodity."

Retail Buyers Still Find Munis Worthwhile

A New Jersey investment firm is one shop that says it has seen steady retail demand for high-quality individual municipal bonds despite the turmoil in the tax-exempt fund industry. Higher yields have helped draw individuals to bonds. “The decline in municipals over the last several months has provided a good opportunity for individual investors,” said Bill Walsh, founder and president of Hennion & Walsh in Parsippany, N.J.

Press Release

Hennion & Walsh Helps Raise Over $30,000 for Gift of Life Family House

Philadelphia-Based Non-Profit Provides Lodging, Support and Critical Resources to Transplant Patients and Their Family Members

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – May 24, 2010 – Hennion & Walsh, one of the nation's premier providers of investment services and an advocate for individual investors, hosted Jackson's 6th Annual Mulligan on Life Golf Outing on Monday, May 17, to benefit the Gift of Life Family House. The Philadelphia-based non-profit organization provides lodging, support services and critical resources to transplant patients and their families. The event raised approximately $30,000 for this worthwhile cause.

The Mulligan on Life outing is named for Jackson Heller, an eight-year-old boy who was diagnosed in 2002 with a rare liver disease, biliary atresia. The Heller family saw firsthand the need for support for transplant patients and their families, not only in terms of lodging, but also as it relates to understanding the unique concerns of transplant patients. For example, while the Hellers were able to stay at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, they had questions about medication and infections that other families weren't necessarily dealing with.

Jackson's father, Gregg, has worked for Hennion & Walsh since 1995. The company worked with Gregg to allow him to have as much time off as possible to spend with his family during the three months his son spent in the hospital. Since Jackson's successful transplant, Hennion & Walsh has continued to support organ donation through a variety of means. To this end, the company has a made a multiple-year commitment to funding a Family Entertainment Lounge at the Gift of Life Family House and has raised more than $50,000 for that effort in the past two years.

“We saw firsthand the need for resources for families of transplant patients and we've made it our goal to help the Gift of Life Family House in their mission of providing that support and service,” said Richard Hennion, Partner at Hennion & Walsh. “The annual golf outing is a chance to bring together family and friends of the Heller family, celebrate Jackson's second chance at life and raise organ donor awareness while supporting the Gift of Life Family House,” added Bill Walsh, Partner at Hennion & Walsh.

The event included a day of golf, lunch, cocktails and dinner at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, N.J., and attracted 120 golfers. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Gift of Life Donor Program, which has helped coordinate more than 29,000 life-saving transplants along with approximately 300,000 tissue transplants and has become an internationally recognized center for training and education for transplant professionals through its Gift of Life Institute. The Gift of Life Donor Program oversees the Gift of Life Family House.

Stocks Pare Losses; 3M Weak

NEW YORK-U.S. stocks pared some of their earlier losses as the dollar weakened, but disappointing jobs data and concerns over monetary tightening in China dampened sentiment.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 16 points, or 0.2%, to 10551, in recent trading. The Dow's materials and industrials components suffered, including 3M, down 1.2%, DuPont, down 0.6% and Caterpillar, down 0.6%. Economically-sensitive General Electric was also weak, down 0.7%.

The Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.1%. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.2%, with all of its sectors in the red, except for technology. The declines were led by the consumer staples.

The materials sector also dragged after a report showed a higher-than-expected 2.7% rise in China's consumer price index for February, reigniting conerns over how U.S. companies might be impacted if China moves to clamp down growth. China also said industrial production during the first two months of the year expanded 20.7% from a year earlier, picking up from an 18.5% rise in December and higher than the 19.5% rise economists had expected.

Other data showed that the rapid growth in China's bank lending and investment spending slowed in February, a sign that the government's gradual withdrawal of stimulus policies in recent months is starting to have an effect on the real economy.

"If China's not going to be buying as much of our goods, that has a big impact on multi-nationals in the U.S. that generally lead us out of recession," said Kevin Mahn, portfolio manager of Hennion & Walsh's SmartGrowth Funds.

Among U.S. reports, the number of idled U.S. workers applying for jobless benefits fell by 6,000 last week, a positive sign for the labor market and the economy, although the weekly decline was smaller than the 9,000 drop economists had expected.

However, there was an unexpected narrowing in the U.S. trade gap. The Commerce Department reported the U.S. deficit in international trade of goods and services decreased 6.6% to $37.29 billion in January, lower than Wall Street expectations for a $41.0 billion shortfall.

Investors said this week's one-year anniversary of the bull market prompted some anxiety among fund managers whose returns may not have matched the market's meteoric rise in the last 12 months.

"I think people are primarily concerned about what the next leg in this bull market recovery will be," Hennion and Walsh's Mr. Mahn said.

In other markets Thursday, the dollar weakened against both the euro and the yen. Crude-oil futures fell below $82 a barrel while gold futures also moved lower. Treasurys slipped, with the 10-year note recently off 4/32 to yield 3.735%.

Among stocks in focus, Devon Energy climbed 1.3% as U.K. oil major BP agreed to buy its international and deepwater Gulf of Mexico portfolio in a $7 billion deal. American depositary shares of BP were up 0.5%. The deal gives BP seven exploration blocks in Brazil's Campos basin, home to a number of significant producing oil fields.

Men's Wearhouse fell 3.1% after the suit and apparel retailer swung to a fiscal fourth-quarter loss on a write-down and lower sales and margins.

Gymboree climbed 11%. The children's apparel maker's fiscal fourth-quarter profit grew 13%, topping the company's February guidance on higher sales and margins.
